Chambers praises his new member’s cloud innovations

Cisco has appointed Marc Benioff, CEO and co-founder of the popular cloud-based customer relations management (CRM) software provider, as the newest member of its board of directors.

Having created a dominant force in the Software-as-a-Service space, Benioff, 47, will now also have a say in the direction of the world’s leading provider of network switches and routers.

John Chambers, Cisco chairman and CEO, said Benioff’s work in the Cloud sector had been transformational. “Marc has changed the face of technology through his bold ideas around cloud computing and the social enterprise,” he said.’s social-enterprise platform is called Chatter. The company launched the intra-company social-networking solution in early 2011.

Before co-founding, Benioff spent 13 years working at Oracle, which now has a product that competes directly with’s CRM software called Oracle Fusion CRM.

Along with Benioff, Cisco also appointed to its board Kristina Johnson, CEO of Enduring Hydro and former US under secretary of energy. Enduring Hydro is a clean energy development and consulting company.

Under secretary of energy is a post at the US Department of Energy. This secretary’s primary work is to oversee the department’s renewable energy, energy efficiency, fossil energy, nuclear energy and electricity delivery programs.

Johnson and Benioff join what including them becomes a 14-member board of directors. Other members of the Cisco board include the co-founder and former chief executive of Yahoo! Jerry Yang, former CEO of Vodafone Arun Sarin, former chairman and CEO of Wells Fargo & Company Richard Kovacevich and president of Stanford University John Hennessy.
